Bullecourt-Bourlon Wood

Can Bourlon Wood be seen from Bullecourt? And if not how far east does one have to travel before its dark mass looms in to view? Alternatively, does anyone have a 1:50k map with contours of the Arras/Cambrai area that I can use to work out the answer?

Having done the observation in the other direction - I failed to see Bullecourt from Bourlon Wood but then that wasn't my main preoccupation at the time.

I've just had a play about in Google Maps and Earth and I think the answer is no. The distance is about 8.3 miles and the low ridge between Bullecourt and Queant seems to block the view. From the top of the ridge just before it descends into Queant it might be visible but with the resolution on my laptop it's inconclusive. Sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer.

Thanks for looking Pete. I agree, the ridge probably does block the view, and in doing so it probably answers my second question.

I may have to go and take one of my imfamous sloping horizon photographs next time I'm in the area just to satisfy my own curiousity. If you see someone juggling a camera, compass, map and a pair of very heavy East German binoculars by the roadside of the D38 that will be me.........

I don't think I have ever driven along the D38 but when I do I will keep my eyes open.
