nilved Posted 2 October , 2004 Posted 2 October , 2004 My maternal grandfather served with the 1st Battalion Kings Dragoon Guards, Reg. No. 17243. He married on the 31st December 1919 in Kirkcaldy, Fife and his marriage certificate states: "Signed William Casey, (Pte 17243 1st Batt. Kings Dragoon Guards) Batchelor." Address given as "26 Main Street, Lumphinnans (stationed in India). I believe he was also in Afghanistan at the Khyber Pass where he was wounded. I remember he had the top of a finger missing, thumb I think. From the QDG Curator I got: "The KDG did not leave Afghanistan until 25th August 1919, arriving back in Risalpur on 28th August. It was here (October 1919) that many soldiers of the regiment were demobilised, their release being deferred owing to the Afghan War (if William Casey was married on 31st December then it was this time he must have left the regiment). The KDG left India on January 10th 1920 going firstly to Iraq, and then to England and arriving at Redford Barracks Edinburgh Scotland January 1921. I have checked the medal roll for World War 1 (this is a roll for those soldiers that were with the regiment in India prior to going to France 1914). He does not appear on that roll which is dated 11/11/1914. I have looked further through the information that I hold here in Cardiff. This is what I found. During the Afghan War there is a W. Casey on the wounded roll. His regimental number is 17243 and he is a Signaller. This could be who we are looking for as there is only one number difference, 9 instead of 7. If this is the case then that is all the info I can find. There is no mention of how he was wounded or what happened after." I would explain that the difference in Reg. No. comes from my interpretation of the marriage certificate which is a bit difficult to read. I assume the QDG Museum is correct. I can find no recored of him in the National Archive Campaign Medal section. Are there any other records for medals? Any information on him or the KDG during this period in Afghanistan/India appreciated. Also I have no photos. Any photographs from around this time for the KDG also welcome. Jim Devlin
