I have a list of some of those who "remustered" from the RFC and RNAS on the formation of the RAF but unfortunately it is too large to attach. It shows in particular one CHURCHHOUSE R W who is listed with the 'RNAS/RFC Trade Classification' "Storeman" and 'RNAS Rating or RFC Rank' as "A.Mech. 2" who is remustered to 'Air Force Trade Classification' "Labourer" with the 'New Rank in Air Force' of "Private 1". This almost appears to be the wrong way round. I would be very grateful if anyone is able to give me a link or clarify the rank system that was adopted in that period immediately after the formation of the Royal Air Force.

The rules (very complex) were laid down in Air Force Memorandum No.1 -"Transfer of the RNAS and the RFC to the RAF". An RFC "Storeman" (as this man was) could become a "Storeman" or "Labourer" RAF depending on his employment. It indicates that "Air Mechanic Class II" RFC should remuster to "Private 2nd Class" RAF.

Thank you for that. Obviously very complex when an Air Mechanic (Army) becomes a Private (RAF). Still as I am ex-RN I guess the junior service had a lot to learn, it even chose an "unfortunate" day in April for its birth I believe!
