Violet Posted 15 January , 2014 Posted 15 January , 2014 My family believe that my maternal Grandmother was in the Pay corps in WW1. Her name was Grace Tearle. She lived in Bexleyheath, Kent. Are there any records I could access ? Can anyone help, please?
Jim Strawbridge Posted 16 January , 2014 Posted 16 January , 2014 Your maternal grand-mother would not have served directly in the Army Pay Corps. She is more likely to have served in Queen Mary's Army Auxiliary Corps and been attached to the Army Pay Corps.
Scalyback Posted 16 January , 2014 Posted 16 January , 2014 To confuse matters more the musuem that may be able to help would be the Adjutant General's Corp in Winchester. As this moden day unit was fromed from the pay corp and others.
Violet Posted 16 January , 2014 Author Posted 16 January , 2014 Many thanks it is all a bit hazy, so will follow your suggestions. Any more ideas?

Mary Ingham (Tracing your Service Women Ancestors) devotes a couple of pages to the Army Pay Department. Woolwich started the ball rolling by taking on unofficial women volunteers, but before long women were officially employed by the War Office (at least 2 years before the WAAC was formed!). By war's end there were 28,000 female clerks under 279 Lady Superintendents. Some indeed transferred later to WAAC/QMAAC but I have no idea of the numbers involved.
