roypaule Posted 13 January , 2014 Posted 13 January , 2014 Hi all, I'm trying to do a research on a steamship named Liffey Maid (Fleetwood). I understand that there were casualties recorded on this ship as of 25 August 1917. What happened to this ship on this date? was she attacked by a u-boat or mined and sunk hence the casualties? location? Thank you in advance. Roy
Michael Lowrey Posted 13 January , 2014 Posted 13 January , 2014 Roy, The Liffey Maid wasn't a steamer, but rather a 111 grt schooner built in 1865 in Dublin. Official Number: 51087. Owner per the 1916/17 edition of Lloyd's Register of Shipping was Miss H. McClenaham with the vessel registered in Fleetwood. Liffey Maid sailed on August 25, 1917 from St. Valery for Ellesmere Port with a cargo of flint but never arrived at her destination. The vessel was posted as missing. There’s no known matching U-boat sinking claim. Given that the weather was rather nasty about August 28, it’s likely that the Liffey Maid simply foundered with the loss of all hands. Best wishes, Michael
Terence Munson Posted 13 January , 2014 Posted 13 January , 2014 Seems the powers that be decided otherwise and four are commemorated: DAVIS, T. Seaman CWGC Link JENSEN, JENS CHRISTIAN (59) Master CWGC Link JONES, CHARLES. Mate CWGC Link RALPH, G. Cook CWGC Link Terry
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 13 January , 2014 Posted 13 January , 2014 I think that these men are commemorated on Tower Hill as 'believed drowned'.
Terence Munson Posted 13 January , 2014 Posted 13 January , 2014 Many of those commemorated who were lost at sea are/were presumed drowned. Terry
Guest Posted 12 December , 2019 Posted 12 December , 2019 Hello, I see that you have been enquiringly about the Liffey Maid of Fleetwood. My family owned this boat but had sold it before she sank. The Liffey Maid traded out of Killyleagh in Strangford Lough Co Down, she took potatoes and other agricultural produce to the north of England and returned with coal. I have a painting of her under sail coming into Belfast Lough.
Guest Posted 18 March , 2021 Posted 18 March , 2021 I have an update on Liffey Maid. My Great Great Grandfather Robert McClenahan was a ship owner from Dundalk/Blackrock, Co. Louth in Ireland. He owned the ship from 1913-1915 and it presumably passed to Hannah Isabella McClenahan (his daughter) on his death in 1915. Hannah was my mothers paternal grandmother. https://www.benjidog.co.uk/Tower Hill/WW1 Lepanto to Linwood.html
