I have been researching my local War Memorial and Church Memorials with some success but have found some names on church memorials with no other details. I have checked SDGW and CWGC and suspect the following men may be the ones I am after but can find no Campbeltown connection, would anyone know of any way to identify if any of these men are Campbeltown men.

1. Listed as.... J McTaggart..

Could be....

Drv. John McTaggart... 52217.... RFA.. KIA 25/4/15.. Helles Memorial.. or

Gnr. John McTaggart.. 300489.. RGA.. Died 19/10/18. Mikra Cemy

2. Listed as Alex Blackhall..

Could be

Pte Alex Blackhall.. S/12047.. A&SH

Pte Alex Blackhall.. B/6388.... Cameronans

Eng Alex Blackhall.. 2044ES.. RNR

Any help would be much appreciated.

I wish it was more but at least there was a McTaggart family in Campbeltown

McTAGGART, WALTER. Rank: Private. Service No: 300661. Date of Death: 24/03/1918. Age: 22.
Regiment/Service: Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. 1st/8th Bn.
Panel Reference: Panel 77 and 78. Memorial: POZIERES MEMORIAL
Additional Information: Son of Daniel McTaggart, of 16, Old Quay St., Campbeltown, Argyll.
The 1901 Scotland Census shows mother as Betsy and children as Euphemia; Daniel, Walter and Charles - no "J" I'm afraid....
I take it that Walter is there on the Memorial(s), and "J" wasn't for a family or neighbour nickname?
Wait up.... Are these from the main War Memorial or from a Church Memorial?
Walter McTaggart and Alex BlackSTOCK are on the War Memorial.
Can you double check there isn't a transcription error or similar involved?
Is Campbeltown now in Northants?

Thanks for that Kev, I have Walters details on the Memorial.. Did you use "Scotlands People" to check the census.

Yes, but only the "skinny" version on Ancestry.

I just wondered if there was a transcription issue with these as similar Names were on the main Memorial, but obviously you've checked that!

Sorry, not much help!

Both these men (and another 4 with very common names) are only listed on a church memorial, so it is possible it is a mistake on the memorial as there are several spelling mistakes and 1 named who wasn't dead, but difficult to verify as there doesn't seem to be any surviving paperwork. I was hoping there was surviving service records for some of these men.

PS. Campbeltown is still where it always was, I am in England doing missionary work.. :hypocrite:

Keep up the good missionary work, it's no' easy.

There's an Alex Blackhall CEF No obvious Campbelltown connection, born Aberdeen. Might be worth checking Australian records?
