Hi I am researching my family tree and my Grandfather and two of his brothers were all in the KSLI. Robert Paddock and Alfred Paddock both survived and William Paddock died 30/11/1917. Williams medal record has two entries for him. These are " Shrops Yeo 2093 & K.S.L.I. 26569". I have confirmed photographs of both Robert and Alfred in their uniforms and I have an unconfirmed photo of William in his. The William photo shows a soldier in uniform but no sign of a medal, the cap badge is different,he is holding what could be a riding crop and has a braid of some description around his arm and under his left epaulette. This old photograph also has a lot pencil writing on the back but it isnt really legible so doesnt help me. Any help with the Shrops Yeo and KSLI item or uniform ( or indeed any aspect of these three) would be gratefully received.

There is a lady here,Annette, with the handle "6th Shropshires" and a big interest in KSLI,who can probably help with your quest. You need a few more posts to be able to make a personal message here,so I will make her aware of your presence.

In the meantime (before 6th Shropshires arrives), in March 1917, the 1/1st Shropshire Yeomanry merged with its Cheshire counterpart and became the 10th Battalion, KSLI. Both units had been fighting as dismounted infantry for some time so this was a recognition of the reality on the ground. My guess is that's how he gets the two unit mentions.

That said, Annette will glance in her database, look at the KSLI service number, and tell you that I'm talking bo&&ocks.

Hi Alan

Without seeing William photo I would say he could be wearing the Shropshire Yeomanry cap badge seeing that its different from Robert and Alfred's ? but would have to see photo to be sure.

Going by facts that I know about other men near his K.S.L.I. Regt. Number, I place him landed in France around 21st September 1916 and transferred to the K.S.L.I. on 29th September 1916. He joined the 6th Battalion on about 1st October 1916. He was killed while the 6th Battalion were making a counter-attack on Germans who had made a surprise attack at Cambrai. The Battalion advanced from high ground near Fifteen Ravine towards quarry N-E of Gouzeaucourt, moving up lower slopes of Quentin Ridge, either side of the quarry (this quarry is not to be mixed up with the one S-E of Gouzeaucourt which is called of Quentin Quarry). At this point they came under heavy fire from the front and enfilade from Gouzeaucourt. Pressing on they engaged with German troops who were advancing towards them, stopping them, the Battalion then linked up with British troops on the left but the right flank was in the air, so one company placed at Gouzeaucourt cemetery to watch this flank. Later in the day they assisted the Guards take the village by firing into the flank of the retiring Germans. After dusk the Battalion moved south down the railway line to Quentin Quarry from where one they were to take ridge, they were soon met by heavy machine gun fire, however one company took the first line. Later in the night the Battalion had to withdraw to made way for an attack by another Division.

12711 Robert, Paddock's service papers are on Ancestry but there are only 8 pages that I could find, if you do not have Ancestry I will copy the details from the pages and send them to you.

I do not have Alfred Paddock in my database, do you mind passing on what details you have on him please.

Hi Annette

Thanks for your response. I have added the photos I have to my gallery and titled them accordingly.

If you could copy the details from the Ancestry pages and send them to me I would really appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Alan.

I will copy details from Robert's paper over next couple of days and get back to you. Also do you mind if I copy your photos for my collect of K.S.L.I. men ?

I am researching the names on the memorial tablet in Clunbury Church (hropshire). One of the names is William Paddock who I believe was a member of the KSLI. Do you have a birthdate and place for your William Paddock? It seems as though the Clunbury William may be the same as your relative William but do you have any idea why he would be living in our part of Shropshire? It would seem that the Clunbury William was a bellringer in Clunbury Church.

Hi Valeriechristina

The publication Soldiers Died in the Great War does not give a birth place for 26569 Pte. William, Paddock just records him residing at Aston-on-Clun.

C.W.G.C. records his parents, William and Margaret Paddock, of Yew Trees, Bagley, Ellesmere.
