Patrick Watt Posted 8 January , 2014 Posted 8 January , 2014 Dear all Came across a MIC which contained some information I hadn't seen before. The man was a recruit to the 4th Cameron Highlanders in September 1914 and was commissioned in April 1915, his MIC says into the Reserve of Officers. He was Pte 2068 John Goulding with an address given as 44 St Silass Road, Blackburn. However his MIC states that he was ineligible to receive medals for his service as he was on a 'Black List' also called at the top of the MIC 'Suspense List/71'. The entry on the MIC states 'no medals - ineligible - Min 21 - 68/121/1786 (Black List)'. Any ideas what this means? What did he do to get on the Black List? Patrick
sotonmate Posted 8 January , 2014 Posted 8 January , 2014 Patrick There doesn't seem to be an Officer service record for this man,his original attestation would be there too. His MIC shows the ref for a 1914-15 Star as a Cameron H,which equates to ledger WO329/2805 page 584. Worth a look there to see what the page says. Never come across a Black List as yet,did come across a Suspense List a few days ago,and don't know what that is either !
Patrick Watt Posted 8 January , 2014 Author Posted 8 January , 2014 Hi sotonmate Thanks for checking. Curiouser and curiouser........ Patrick
HarryBrook Posted 8 January , 2014 Posted 8 January , 2014 He was commissioned into 3rd Battn. Bedfordshire Regt. on 21.4.1915 (on probation) http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/29136/pages/3833 Confirmed in his rank (2nd. Lt.), Bedfordshire Regt. (no battalion stated) http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/29918/supplements/940 Resigned his commission on 22.5.1917 (still 2nd Lt., Bedfordshire Regt.) http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/30082/supplements/4929 The reason for his resignation is unknown, but is, perhaps, the reason for being blacklisted. A MIC exists on ancestry for 'Lt. J. Goulding', Bedfordshire Regt. It shows no medal entitlement. In the remarks column is written 'Mr. Brett 28.3.47'
Patrick Watt Posted 8 January , 2014 Author Posted 8 January , 2014 Hi Harry Thanks for this! The war diary for the 2nd Bedfords is available online (http://www.bedfordregiment.org.uk/) but makes no mention of Goulding nor does any of the other Bedford Regiment's battalions war diaries. This is getting stranger! Patrick
