Guest davymed Posted 7 January , 2014 Posted 7 January , 2014 I am due to complete a book on the Centenary of the Brighton Unit (Division) of St John Ambulance, which was registered as a unit in June 1915. Although people were very helpful in sending me information for our 90th in 2004-5, there may be more details that possibly have come to light and would be of great interest by now. All its members were working as Voluntary Aid Detachment in the Sussex 53rd section and worked throughout the war to transport wounded soldiers from the station to many hospitals in Brighton and Hove. In addition, ladies who were wives or family members were also working, some as ARP callers at night to call out their members in an air raid, or as nurses. If any of you who may have found any relevant information on this subject or on the St John Ambulance, and who can give permission for inclusion of suitable material in my book, would you please contact me so that I can work on any details.
Jim Strawbridge Posted 8 January , 2014 Posted 8 January , 2014 I think that I am right in that Sussex 53 would be an all-male unit. Women would have been in an even numbered unit.
tharkin56 Posted 20 April , 2014 Posted 20 April , 2014 did you pick up a copy of Hove and the Great War of archive.org
