sw63 Posted 7 January , 2014 Posted 7 January , 2014 Sea Odyssey giants return to Liverpool for WW1 commemoration: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-25629598 Take a look - they are HUGE! Simon
centurion Posted 7 January , 2014 Posted 7 January , 2014 Fascinating but can any one explain the connection with WW1 ?
bruce Posted 7 January , 2014 Posted 7 January , 2014 Although the young lady and the dog have no connection with the Great War, the other puppet will be in uniform, to represent the Liverpool Pals. Although there is a memorial to the first of the Pals battalions in Montauban on the Somme, there is not one in Liverpool to the 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th bttns. of the Kings (Liverpool) Regt. Fundraising is ongoing to remedy this, with pins and wristbands being sold, and it is hoped that next year a new memorial will be unveiled at the Pierhead to those who first replied to Lord derby's plea. sw63 Posted 7 January , 2014 Author Posted 7 January , 2014 From today's Wirral Globe: "To keep up with [the latest news about this event go to] www.giantspectacular.com. The full 14-18 NOW programme launch will take place in spring. In the meantime, the latest information can be found at www.1418now.org.uk. Liverpool will also have a programme of events taking place to commemorate World War One, which will be organised by various organisations, businesses and community groups across the city. Details will be unveiled in the forthcoming months". Simon
daggers Posted 7 January , 2014 Posted 7 January , 2014 Bruce You say 'Pier Head', but I have read only that the memorial is to be at Lime Street Station. Has the plan changed? Daggers
BIFFO Posted 7 January , 2014 Posted 7 January , 2014 They were in northampton last year we went to see them well worth the effort Biff
Roxy Posted 7 January , 2014 Posted 7 January , 2014 I've just seen this on the local ITV news. Part of the piece stated that "5000 left from Liverpool to fight in the Great War. Only 1500 came back." That seems quite poor odds. Is it correct? Roxy
Mark Hone Posted 8 January , 2014 Posted 8 January , 2014 On BBC 'Northwest Tonight' it was the 'vast majority' of 10 battalions of Liverpool Pals who did not return. Another example of the widespread popular misconception, discussed before on this Forum, that most British soldiers who served in the Great War were killed.
Stephen Nulty Posted 8 January , 2014 Posted 8 January , 2014 ..... 10 battalions of Liverpool Pals...... Wonder where they got that figure from?
andalucia Posted 9 January , 2014 Posted 9 January , 2014 Having seen them last time they were in Liverpool, I am delighted they are coming back. It is a wonderful thing to see, if you can make it then it is well worthwhile. Even better that the theme is WW1. They are huge, just brilliant.
