Paul E Posted 5 January , 2014 Posted 5 January , 2014 I am researching the service of my Grandfather who was with the 4th Battn Royal Fusiliers when he was wounded on 28th August 1917. The War Diary for the period indicates that they were involved in an action to attack 40 (near Zonnebeke) from their camp at Potsdam farm "pill box". I have been unable to find any maps showing the location of Hill 40, does anyone have any by any chance or can let me know where it was more accurately? Any help greatly appreciated.
sotonmate Posted 5 January , 2014 Posted 5 January , 2014 Paul Go down the page to Document Repository on the Menu and then click on Maps. You might find what you seek there as there are some very good map sections posted.
Phil Evans Posted 5 January , 2014 Posted 5 January , 2014 (edited) Paul, The map reference is 28.D.21.d Very close to Zonnebeke Station. Phil Edit: for those with sharp eyes, I have corrected the map ref from 21.c to 21.d Edited 5 January , 2014 by Phil Evans
Admin Michelle Young Posted 5 January , 2014 Admin Posted 5 January , 2014 Where Ernie Serls was killed (see my signature) pm me and I can send you a map Michelle
BelgianExile Posted 5 January , 2014 Posted 5 January , 2014 This thread might be useful - I'm fairly sure that Anzac Ridge and Hill 40 were one and the same (but stand by to be corrected!).
WilliamRev Posted 5 January , 2014 Posted 5 January , 2014 I wonder if you mean 28th September rather than 28th August? The 4th Royal Fusiliers, 9th Brigade (3rd Division) were heavily engaged at Zonnebeke/ Hill40 in the Battle of Polygon Wood 27th-30th Sept 1917. Either way, I have the map that my grandfather (2nd Lieut. Acting Captain S. Revels, Commanding "A" Company 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers, 8th Brigade, 3rd Division), carried in the battle - 8th Brigade were next to 9th Brigade in the assault - and I have posted a detail of it below - as you can see Hill 40 is at the top just below the number "21". If you e-mail me your e-mail address (my address: william"at"williamrevels.com - replace the "at" with the actual @ symbol), I will e-mail you the entire map - it comes in six scans. I also have several aerial photos of hill 40 and Zonnebeke taken early Sept 1917 which I can e-mail you as well if you like. William
wheelsjbl Posted 6 January , 2014 Posted 6 January , 2014 Based on William's map showing "Hill 40", I have one dated 3/7/17 which shows Potsdam and the un-named hill with the 40 contour. The distance between the two is approximately 1400 metres. Brian P.s. Anzac Ridge, also on a "40" contour can just be seen on this part of the map right at the bottom, almost dead centre.
Paul E Posted 6 January , 2014 Author Posted 6 January , 2014 Thanks for all the replies. I will email you William to take you up on your kind offer, and yes you are right I meant 28th September not August as you guessed. Paul
