Happy New Year

I'm looking for some help with a fallen soldier of the 1st Btn. Norfolk Regiment...

Name: FREDERICK (Fred) RAY

Service number: 41789

Rank: PRIVATE

Enlisted: LEEDS, YORKSHIRE

Unit/Regiment: 1st BATTALION / NORFOLK REGIMENT

According to SDGW he is listed as KILLED IN ACTION, but the reference book Leeds In The Great War and the Leeds Roll of Honour website identify him as DIED.

Could anyone clarify if he was KIA and if so, was this in the Battle of the Canal du Nord?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

kind regards

Steve

Do you have a date? I have the regimental diaries, so can have a look if you can narrow it down a bit!

No problem, I'll have a look through them at work tomorrow (unless someone beats me to it!).

Steve,

Sorry, I've had a look through the diaries that I have and I have the 8th - not the 1st. Looking at the National Archive website, that diary hasn't been digitised as yet, but you can order a copy here. I don't know if the Regimental Museum in Norwich has a copy - you could try pinging them an email via their page here.

Sorry I can't help any more.

1 Norfolk were part of 15 Brigade of 5 Division at the Battle of the Canal-du-Nord at the time of Fred's death.

He is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial as he has no known grave,so likely that he was KIA. The Memorial marks the over 9000 casualties without a grave during the fighting from Aug to Armistice 1918.
