beresford69 Posted 4 January , 2014 Posted 4 January , 2014 Two names on my local War Memorial died and were buried in India. Both were in the Royal Field Artillery. Driver Reginald Knight (234729) died 4th June 1918 and is buried in Ferozepore (Ferozepur) Military Cemetery in the Punjab. Driver Joseph Kidd (37475, 77th Bty.) died on 28th May 1918 and is buried in Dinapore (Dinapur) No 3 Cemetery in the state of Bihar, not far from the Nepalese border. Can any India experts out there give me a rough idea of what they were doing there or point me in the direction of some reading I could do? Presumably they were guarding an outpost of the Empire and looking out for the rumblings of Indian independence. There wasn't any 'fighting' there surely in the sense of what was going on elsewhere? Both of these locations are northern outposts with from what I can see, a long-established military presence. Many thanks. Geoff
David_Underdown Posted 4 January , 2014 Posted 4 January , 2014 There were problems on the North West Frontier, though those were mostly a little later. Knight looks like he might be a TF man with that 6-figure number, many territorials from Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire were sent out to India to release regular battalions for service in France, I can't quite remember if those units had attached artillery, Long, Long Trail should show either way.
sotonmate Posted 4 January , 2014 Posted 4 January , 2014 British units were attached to Indian Brigades/Divisions in India as Garrison, and as assistance against various tribal threats from the North West Frontier. If you check CWGC you will see,for Ferozepore Military Cemetery at least, the WW1 history of our casualties. None found for CWGC Dinapore as yet. I have been looking for ORBATs for Indian Divisions in India, found some the other day but can't yet nail Ferozepore (8 Indian Div I think) or Dinapore Brigade.
