Tricky Dicky Posted 3 January , 2014 Posted 3 January , 2014 Hi all, I have a conundrum regarding my grandfather. I have had a 'hint' from Ancestry that tells me about a WW1 medal rolls index, and this hit shows a Hubert W Carter as being in the Tank Corps with a reg number 110444. Now I know he born 1890, and at 16 was working on the railways, ending up in the late 1950's as a Station Master. I never heard a thing from my father or grandfather about him being in WW1 as I have always assumed being on the railways would have been a 'reserved occupation'. I know that both my grandfathers brothers in law's were involved in the war, but not my grandfather. British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 about Hubert W Carter Name:Hubert W Carter Regiment or Corps: Tank Corps Regimental Number: 110444 I am confused and guess the only way would be to obtain a copy (if the exist due to the 'Burnt' records) of this H W Carters WW1 service record to find out if there are any points of commonality, between them and what I actually know. My grandfather was Hubert Walter Carter, born 1890 Nuneaton, parents Walter John and Harriett Any information on this person would be greatly appreciated so that I can rule in or out this reference from WW1 medal rolls index TD
kenmorrison Posted 3 January , 2014 Posted 3 January , 2014 Hi TD - The index of Medal Cards at the National Archives shows the name as HERBERT W Carter, Private 110444, Tank Corps, so maybe another man??? http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/s/res?_fn=&_ln=carter&_no=110444&_crp=&_ttl=&_ser=WO+372&_dt=M&_col=online&image1.x=58&image1.y=12 Ken
MickLeeds Posted 3 January , 2014 Posted 3 January , 2014 Hello,If you look at this website for the village of Bere Regis, Dorset they have a list of men who served from the area who they are researching for the centenary of the Great War. One of the men on the list is:Carter Hubert Woodward, Private, Depot Wksps, Tank Corps, Chamberlains Bridge http://www.bereregis.org/WW1Research.htm This could be the man on the Ancestry medal index card. Mick.
Stebie9173 Posted 3 January , 2014 Posted 3 January , 2014 Just to confirm, the scan of the original card (on Ancestry) shows Hubert and not Herbert as the forename. The Dorset Absent Voters List confirms that Hubert Woodward Card is the Tank Corps man above with No. 110444 http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/2167/32450_262143-00743/4014036?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3findiv%3d1%26db%3ddorsetelectorspolls%26MS_AdvCB%3d1%26rank%3d1%26new%3d1%26MSAV%3d2%26msT%3d1%26gss%3dangs-d%26gsfn%3dhubert%2b%26gsfn_x%3d1%26gsln%3dcarter%26gsln_x%3d1%26cpxt%3d1%26catBucket%3drstp%26uidh%3d5k3%26cp%3d11%26pcat%3d35%26fh%3d3%26h%3d4014036%26recoff%3d6%2b9%26ml_rpos%3d4&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnRecord Steve.
