Hi all,

I have a conundrum regarding my grandfather. I have had a 'hint' from Ancestry that tells me about a WW1 medal rolls index, and this hit shows a Hubert W Carter as being in the Tank Corps with a reg number 110444. Now I know he born 1890, and at 16 was working on the railways, ending up in the late 1950's as a Station Master. I never heard a thing from my father or grandfather about him being in WW1 as I have always assumed being on the railways would have been a 'reserved occupation'. I know that both my grandfathers brothers in law's were involved in the war, but not my grandfather.

Name:

Hubert W Carter

Regiment or Corps:

Tank Corps

Regimental Number:

110444

I am confused and guess the only way would be to obtain a copy (if the exist due to the 'Burnt' records) of this H W Carters WW1 service record to find out if there are any points of commonality, between them and what I actually know.

My grandfather was Hubert Walter Carter, born 1890 Nuneaton, parents Walter John and Harriett

Any information on this person would be greatly appreciated so that I can rule in or out this reference from WW1 medal rolls index

Hello,

If you look at this website for the village of Bere Regis, Dorset they have a list of men who served from the area who they are researching for the centenary of the Great War. One of the men on the list is:

Carter Hubert Woodward, Private, Depot Wksps, Tank Corps, Chamberlains Bridge

http://www.bereregis.org/WW1Research.htm

This could be the man on the Ancestry medal index card.

Mick.
