Horace Thrustle 5th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment

Hi,

On researching Hull during WW1 I have come across several men who I cannot find on CWGC. Maybe me though!!

Horace Thrustle was accidentally shot in camp on the 26th May 1916 and subsequently died in the Naval Hospital Hull on 31st May 1916.

I have found his register of birth and death, also his 1911 entry.

The 5th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment did not serve overseas so not able to find Medal Index Card.

I have to say - what a fantastic name! Horace Thrustle...

However, I can't find him on CWGC either - have done wildcard searches, date searches etc.

Death is registered on Ancestry as occurring in Hull as per the news report.

Hi,

Thanks Ian, glad its not Me.

As his service record does not appear to have survived then this will depend on his DC.

Hi Chris,

Im sure he was put before the coroner, I will need to look.

Did it matter how a serviceman died before he was accepted as a service death in 1916?.

Charles

In service deaths are accepted regardless of cause; however a proof is required that he was in service which in this case this will be the DC

Hi Chris,

Thanks for that, I will have a look for the Coroners report which will explain the death and circumstances in more detail than a DC, and cheaper.

I have more to look at.

I recently found this old discussion and Thrustle has now (belatedly) been put forward by IFCP.

Horace Thrustle is apparently buried at Hull Western Cemetery: https://www.twgpp.org/photograph/view/4158865

A copy of his burial record will be needed, this may be on microfilm at Hull History Centre: http://hullhistorycentre.org.uk/research/research-guides/microfilm-collections.aspx

Just putting this out there in case anyone in the area can help.

It's a tad coy about his cause of death - but still/always tragic.
