Derek Robertson Posted 30 September , 2004 Posted 30 September , 2004 Through the diligence and observational skills of my friend Derek (aka 9th Black Watch) he informed me that a casualty pair to Private William Matheson of the 28th (North-west) Bn. CEF were being sold by a well known dealer who I quickly contacted. The medals arrived today and as a bonus there was a copy of Williams service record from the Canadian authorities enclosed. The records show that William received a gun shot wound to the head in 1917. However, reading further on, I found the simple yet deeply striking and moving line: "27/8/18 No.7 C.C.S Gun shot wounds - abdomen. Died of wounds" Sometimes for collectors such as myself it is humbling to remember that there was a human story and tragedy behind the things we collect. William Matheson, native of Plockton, Scotland - gone, not forgotten. RIP
Terry Posted 30 September , 2004 Posted 30 September , 2004 Well done, Derek. Did the file include the Circumstance of Death page? As discussed on other threads, the C of D page often elaborates on the bare bones found in the National Archives file.
9th Black Watch Posted 1 October , 2004 Posted 1 October , 2004 No problem Derek, Glad they've gone to a good home. All the best, Derek
