Murphester Posted 1 January , 2014 Posted 1 January , 2014 Hello all Looking for some help with researching the military life of my G-Grandfather, Albert Pullin. I've attached a photo of him in uniform. He was born in 1883 in Newport, Monmouthshire and lived there his entire life. He survived the war. I've been told that he had medals issued to him but not sure which ones, or where they are now. Family member believes he served overseas but does not know where. I have also attached a copy of the Medal Roll Index Card which may/may not belong to him. I found this through a search on ancestry.com. Herein lies my dilemma. How can I tell if this Index Card actually belongs to my Albert Pullin? Does his uniform suggest that he is part of the RFA?Is it possible to find out more about the movements of his particular regiment? Sorry if I'm using the incorrect terminology - not sure if I'm making sense! haha Appreciate any help!
asanewt Posted 1 January , 2014 Posted 1 January , 2014 Photo certainly shows a Royal Artillery man. Any other photo showing shoulder title will answer whether RFA . His stripe indicates job or rank. Maybe Lance Bombadier . Someone who knows the detail will be on it soon. Great photo, thanks. Not related to John Pullin, WRFC ( Ba Ba ) by chance ! The man with a MIC has medals so definitely went overseas
ralphjd Posted 1 January , 2014 Posted 1 January , 2014 100% that this card is your man. Cap badge is the Royal Artillery. His medals as per the card are the British War and Victory medals, no date on the card denotes that he did not serve abroad until after the 1st Jan 1916.
Murphester Posted 1 January , 2014 Author Posted 1 January , 2014 Thanks for your help. I don't have any other photos unfortunately so won't know what's on his shoulders. Great photo, thanks. Not related to John Pullin, WRFC ( Ba Ba ) by chance ! Not that I'm aware of but who knows what I might uncover ... Pullin's were a big family!
Murphester Posted 3 January , 2014 Author Posted 3 January , 2014 Hello all - just another question from me...Someone has been able to check the Absent Voters List for 1918 for me and found my Albert Pullin on there. So, now I have the written proof that the MIC I suspected, is the right one. Written on the Absent Voters List is: 745619 GNR A Batt 157 Bde R.F.A So, from that I get his regimental no. (745619), Gunner, A Battalion (?), 157 Brigade (?), Royal Field Artillery Have I got that right? So, with this info, I can now find out a bit more about his movements during the war? Many thanks
widavies Posted 3 January , 2014 Posted 3 January , 2014 Hi, 157th Bde RFA served with 13th Division in Mesopotamia from 1916. (see link in LLT). http://www.1914-1918.net/13div.htm Regards Will
jay dubaya Posted 4 January , 2014 Posted 4 January , 2014 His 6 digit TF number was part of the block 745001 -750000 issued to the Welsh Divisional Ammunition Column (Glamorgan) on 22nd November 1916. It would appear that men from this unit were dispersed throughout many other RFA units. As yet I can see no pattern (this number block appears to have also been used by the Cheshire Brigade RFA TF) maybe the more learnered members can enlighten us. jon
