W J Yates died on the 5th August 1918. I have been able to put a lot of information together into the attached document. However I cannot find a date of enlistment. There is not a service record on Ancestry. This battalion were constantly on the western front from 15 August 1914 to the 11 November 1918. The war diary is an amazing read. Does any one have any ideas about who I could find out when he enlisted.

A quick run through a few records shows that a 51118 Royal Fusiliers enlisted 12 July 1916,aged 19 and 3/4. Can't think that your 51172 was far behind him.

Many thanks for the reply and yes it seems totally logical that he would have enlisted around Aug 1916. I was able to find the service record you identified on ancestry. I would like to see if there are any even nearer to his number. Can I ask what search criteria you would suggest using? I wonder how long the training was in 1916, I guess it was not very long until he was posted to the front line.
