1/5th Battalion

What does the 1 signify in e.g 1/5th Battalion?

Posted

1st of the 5th

ie the 5th Battalion has been duplicated gaining 2/5th, 3/5th etc

You would pronounce it "First Fifth"

I don't think there is a generic name for the first digits of the descriptions of duplicated battalions

It is in effect the 1st Battalion of the 5th Battalion[& so on depending on the number of TF Battalions in the Regiment],This issue has been addressed on numerous occassions on this Forum & Details can be found on Territorial Battalion numbering postings

Hello,

The number 1/5th means the First line Territorial 5th Battalion. The 2/5th Bn. means the Second line Territorial. During the First World War, there were first, second, and third line Territorials. Among them, generally, 1st & 2nd Territorials served in the Front Line.

Regards,

Kang
