Jim Mitchell Posted 30 December , 2013 Posted 30 December , 2013 Hi all, this one is a real shot in the dark. Any help would be appreciated as I have struck a blank at every turn. The man I need info on is John Llewelyn Davies who was according to family information killed in the First World War. He was born in 1878. the 1911 census has him as John Davies living with his wife Maud and two children in Commission Street, Salford. unfortunately thats all I have apart from him being an iron worker. I have exhausted all the usual serches "CWGC site service records check etc etc" . The only John Llewelyn Davies I found does not tie in with the age given. As I said I would be grateful for any help. Regards.
johnboy Posted 30 December , 2013 Posted 30 December , 2013 By 1915 your man would have been 37, Does the address on the census tie up with family info? Have you looked for a Mic on ancestry?Maybe he remained in Britain during the war although in the army? As you have had found one . but with the wrong age maybe a closer look is needed as mistakes were made in transcribing docs.
John_Hartley Posted 30 December , 2013 Posted 30 December , 2013 There's no John Llewelyn Davies listed on the Salford Absent Voters List. Nor any Davies listed as a resident of Commission Street.
KevinBattle Posted 30 December , 2013 Posted 30 December , 2013 Does any of the information you have match with this man? DAVIES, JOHN. Rank: Staff Serjeant. Service No: 22743. Date of Death: 09/01/1921. Age: 36. Regiment/Service: Royal Field Artillery. 1st Div. Ammunition Col. attd. 128th Horse Transport Coy. (Mesopotamia). Royal Army Service Corps Grave Reference: G. 1711. Cemetery: SALFORD (WEASTE) CEMETERY Additional Information: Son of George and Mary Alice Davies, of 11, Whalley St., Crescent, Salford. (no mention of wife, and not strictly an IN WW1 death, but obviously related as on CWGC).... EDIT: Perhaps not, your chap is Name: John Llewelyn Davies. Birth Year: abt 1878. Age: 23. Marriage Date: 31 Aug 1901. Parish: Longsight, St Clement Father's Name: John Davies. Spouse's Name: Maud Eliza Baker. Spouse's Father's Name: Elijah Baker. Reference Number: M352/3/2/2. Item Number: 1. Archive Roll: 852. Mother Mary A Davies is shown as being born in America about 1858. Living with them is widowed mother in law Sarah Handley, born Ireland about 1823. John had 2 sisters, Mary and Annie. Living in Hatherton Street, Salford in 1891.
Jim Mitchell Posted 31 December , 2013 Author Posted 31 December , 2013 Thanks a lot guys I know the info is sparse but that is all the family gave me to work with. Kevin the John L Davies in Longsight is definately my guy thankyou. his war service remains a mystery though as I can`t tie in anything with the information given. The family say he was killed in WW1 but I am having my doubts. Again thankyou all.
John_Hartley Posted 31 December , 2013 Posted 31 December , 2013 The deaths index on Ancestry doesnt have any likely John LLewelyn Davies but there is a John L Davies, born circa 1880, died Salford 1936. Common name though.
RobertBr Posted 31 December , 2013 Posted 31 December , 2013 Jim There are many instances of youngsters lying about their age to join up. Equally an older man may have 'lost' a few years to get an active service posting. Bob
Jim Mitchell Posted 2 January , 2014 Author Posted 2 January , 2014 Thank`s Bob I have information from his birth certificate so I know it`s the right date. My main frustration is the information the family gave me regarding him being killed in WW1. Ah well I will plod on. Best regards.
KevinBattle Posted 2 January , 2014 Posted 2 January , 2014 What about following his wife's trail? When did Maud Eliza Davies die (or remarry?) His mother was born in America, they can be pretty hot on tracing ancestral lines, have you thought about that? Mary A Davies and there was a mother in law, Sarah Handley born Ireland, so presumably that was his mothers maiden name, so a Mary A Handley b America might help put you on track... Nothing there to help with Service record but you might be able to trace his death in a roundabout way, either WW1 or not....
seaJane Posted 2 January , 2014 Posted 2 January , 2014 Jim, I wonder if the family has confused him with George Llewelyn Davies who is much better known and was KIA 1915? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Llewelyn_Davies Just an idea. sJ
Admin kenf48 Posted 2 January , 2014 Admin Posted 2 January , 2014 At age 38 in 1916 he would have come under the provision of the Military Service Act so no need to fake his age; he would not be on the AVL if he was dead. Have you considered Pte 75880 John Davies born Salford died of wounds 27 March 1918 9th Bn Royal Welsh Fusiliers formerly 45913 Liverpool Regiment? (SDGW) http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/259455/DAVIES,%20J MIC shows he did not serve overseas with the King's (Liverpool Regiment) and entitled to a pair. Can't find a service record but a RWF/Liverpool numbers expert may help. As you say in 1911 Census seems to have dropped the Llewelyn so may have just used the John on enlistment. Can't find a will for him though. Ken
Jim Mitchell Posted 4 January , 2014 Author Posted 4 January , 2014 Hi Guys I can discount the American Handley, his wifes name before marriage was Maud Eliza Baker born 1876, this could also be Maude Elizabeth "just to confuse matters". These are details passed on from the family taken from the marriage certificate. Regards.
