Woodsc Posted 29 December , 2013 Posted 29 December , 2013 Hi Can anyone please help? I am researching Corporal S Markham 202009 2/4th Lincolnshire Regiment who according to the information I have was in the Lewis Gun Section No.6 Platoon along with soldiers I have the names and regiment numbers. He went to France 24/2/1917 Can anyone please provide any information relating to his Machine Gun Section etc Thank You Colin
Colin W Taylor Posted 29 December , 2013 Posted 29 December , 2013 Colin The war diary may be of assistance but they generally don't mention the movements of individual sections, seldom even platoons. It can be looked up at Kew http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C7355208 ... or a transcript can be downloaded here for £3. http://www.lulu.com/shop/poacher-books/war-diaries-of-the-lincolnshire-regiment-24th-battalion-tf/ebook/product-14846931.html I hope they help. Providing the names and numbers of the men in his section may enable more to be found out about them and when they served together. Kind regards Colin
sotonmate Posted 30 December , 2013 Posted 30 December , 2013 Colin There are two War Diaries involved. The above link is to 2/4 Bn up to the point of it's amalgamation with 1/4 at the end of Jan 1918 and the whole became 4 Battalion under ref WO95/2590/4,again a digital doc and downloadable. All action for both Diaires in the same 177 Brigade of 59 Division. You at least have a date for his entry into a war zone so can be sure which (apart from a bit of leave perhaps) actitivy relates to his participation.
Woodsc Posted 30 December , 2013 Author Posted 30 December , 2013 Many Thanks Colin and Sotonmate My man was killed 15th April 1918 so I have downloaded a copy of the diary for that period ~ and will get a copy of the earlier diary Thank once again Regards..Colin
