Ding Van Dyke - bells for WW1

Watching this last night, I did wonder what I would do in his circumstances... Moral dilemma for the day: You are a vicar in a rural parish and you come into £400k like this... do you spend all £400k on 'community/church' stuff? Do you reward yourself with some of it, in which case how much? Enough for one nice holiday? A new car?.... Keep 10% of it, so £40k?

Nice problem to have, but a problem nonetheless...

Possibly he's a trendy Bishop and not into bells, WW1 memorials etc.

Great news and good on him! I hope it makes more and with the story it might well. Good to see someone sticking to ideals in this day and age.

Having watched the prog last night, I now have my solution to the moral quandary. I would sell the sketch to the Ashmolean, to go with their two existing items relating to this lost painting, for the price of the set of bells for the church and a couple of grand for me to splurge - Ashmolean gets £400k worth of painting for £60-70k, I get my bells and the warm glow of knowing the painting is available to the public and is with two other sketches done for the same painting...

All's right with the world.

What does a parish priest go in for in the way of splurging? Are they permitted to splurge?

Good on him for wanting the bells as a memorial to all those killed in WW1.

To be honest I did not even know that Dick Van Dyke painted

Surely you remember the chalk drawings on the pavement in Mary Poppins!?

A few points of fact. Fr Macleod is not a vicar in a rural or any other parish he is the director of a retreat house in I believe Derbyshire. Fr Macleod is not a priest in the C of E or the Roman Catholic Church but a priest in The Old Catholic church. For more information see here http://www.oldcatholicchurchuk.com/About-Us.html

I hope I haven't broken any rules on religious discussion but thought I should put things in there correct context.

I was going to mention that he is the director of a retreat and also on East Midlands today :w00t: (only yesterday though). The retreat is in the Peak District but I cannot remember the place name (must take more notice of EMT news)

But has he taken a vow to renounce ever splurging?

Whaley. On the other point Old Catholic clergy are self supporting and do not receive stipends (like an increasing number of C of E clergy) so presumably the gentleman has to have an income from somewhere, so it wouldn't really be splurging as you put it, to use some of the profit. Clergy do not generally take vows of poverty.
