Peter furness Posted 27 December , 2013 Posted 27 December , 2013 Hi Looking into soldier called Henry William Hill of 25th battalion machine gun corps who died 24/03/1918. Specifically as any possibilities where he would be fighting, description of battles, trench maps etc? thanks Pete
sotonmate Posted 27 December , 2013 Posted 27 December , 2013 Pete 25 Battalion MGC would have been with 25 Division. It was around the time of his death that MGC Battalions came into being, prior to this there were MG Companies, one attached to each Infantry Brigade of a Division. They were numbered the same as the Brigade. Your soldier has no apparent surviving service record so it might be dificult to be sure if he served in a Company initially. His Medal Card indicates that he didn't fight until after the end of 1915.You can see where 25 Division were at the time of his death from their page in the Long Long Trail,at top left of this page. They will also have a War Diary at Kew. PS The three MG Companies in 25 Division, 74,75 and 7,all joined to become 25 Battalion MGC on 1 Mar 1918,so you man would havwe been in one of these initially.
