Forum talents are needed to help sort out, if possible, another mystery on the Pirbright (Surrey) War Memorial, please.

Pte G/23504 William Boylett, 2 Bn Middx. (MIC) Believed F&F Aug 1916

Died 24/12/1916 F&F. Bur Croisilles (CWGC+SDGW)

However, local newspaper quotes report of him missing in November & death as prisoner of war 24/12/16. So how could he be buried at Croisilles if a p.o.w.?

Also, some research tells me 2 Middx were on the Somme in November. Croisilles is 20 miles north.

Any ideas, please?

From the CWGC website:

Plots I and II of the cemetery, were made between April 1917 and March 1918 and the rest was formed after the Armistice, when graves were brought in from the neighbouring battlefields and from some smaller burial grounds. The majority of the soldiers buried in the cemetery belonged to the Guards, 7th and 21st Divisions.

Despite being buried in Plot 1, he obviously died before the cemetery was started in 1917. He may well have been wounded and taken prisoner but died in a local aid post/hospital and buried locally then moved into Croisilles during hte post-war concentration.

Contact CWGC who should be able to tell you a map reference for where he was originally buried.
