Hi all

After a bit of a break I am planning my next visit to the WF in spring 2014 for 3 night/2 full days of exploring.

I have visited Ypres many times but have always done the usual well known sites. My last trip in 2011 was to the Somme and I found it a totally different experience as I did my first bit of field walking around the Gommecourt German lines and then into Rossignol Wood. So my question here is where in the Ypres area can I do a bit of field walking amongst still existing but not "preserved" trenches ie/ not Sanctuary Wood or Dixmude Trench of death.

Also is spring a decent time to go to see the iron harvest ?

I will be taking a new recruit with me this time so I will be planning to do a mix of the main sites, some field walking if forum members can come up with some suggestions and then I want to have a look at the Wieltje area where a relative was killed.

Many thanks in advance

Matt

Hi Matt,

You can give your new recruit a drilling in Yorkshire Trench in the Ieper Industrial Zone to start.

But walking the field depends on which battle you want to follows as to were to walk.

Can you give me any ideas.

Best regards

PS

Don't forget to include a visit to the revamped Passchendaele Memorial Museum in Zonnebeke - well worth it.

Hi Wayne

Thanks - I was thinking perhaps the battles of Pilkem Ridge/Langemarck and/ or Polygon Wood but open to other suggestions. Would mid/end march be a good time to see the iron harvest ?

Cheers
