"Could you please keep an eye out for any similar history concerning the remount service, as it led a very hand to mouth existence and incorporated ASC, AVC and direct entry personnel (including female civilians) in a way that is definitive, but not at all clearly articulated, or delineated in any official publication that I can find.  There are lots of extremely detailed individual histories covering the various remount establishments, but nothing overarching that transparently lays out the organisation as a whole, including the interface (and inter-cooperation) between the various employee elements".

As far as I can tell, this book "Theirs Not To Reason Why" Horsing the British Army 1875-1925 is the closest that is available.

https://books.google.com.au/books?id=qKNZBAAAQBAJ    Sample pages only, including Contents . Google Books.  Winton's PhD thesis is available online, see my post above.

Whether it covers the aspects FROGSMILE is interested in, I don't know, but one of the sources for Graham Winton's book  was an unpublished book The Story of the Army Remount Service;  compiled by Col Robert Hume, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and former Commandant of Arborfield Remount Depot.  This book is available at the National Army Museum as a word processed book, with the NAM reference   Archives 2012-03-7.  (Search the Objects catalogue https://collection.nam.ac.uk/inventory/objects/index.php )

Arborfield and the Army Remount Service http://www.arborfieldhistory.org.uk/WW1/WW1_Army_Remount_Service.htm mentions Hume

Thank you Maureen.  It will be interesting to see if it contains the detail I’m hoping to find.  I appreciate your taking the time to post the links. I have seen the Arborfield focused piece before.  It seems as if Hume’s published work is probably what I’m looking for.
