hmsk212 Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 Hi Can any pal please tell me what type of work 581 (Humber) F. Wks Co , Royal Engineers would have been involved with during WW1. Steve
tintin1689 Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 I think F.Wks is Fortress Works A large programme of fortification took place on the Humber estuary in the latter part of the Great War
Steve Bramley Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 There still are two forts in the Humber. Bull and Haile Sands. They were manned from 1917, i think. I'll try and find out some more about who they were manned by. Guardians of the Humber Cheers, Steve.
hmsk212 Posted 29 September , 2004 Author Posted 29 September , 2004 Many thanks for both replies. My interest is due to the fact that I now have a silver war badge to a Sapper 285605 Charles John Horne from 581 (Humber) F. Wks Co. Royal Engineers. He served from July 1916 until discharged due to sickness in December 1918. He never served abroad and was aged 56 (yes you did read 56) on discharge. Steve
