leigh Posted 29 September , 2004 Share Posted 29 September , 2004 HI, I have just recieved some aerial photos (along with other real exciting stuff that can wait for the moment ) I would like to locate their positions on the ground/ trench map. Firstly the notes (in bold) on one of the photos... 4B 566 15.5.18. 1130 27.X16.17.22.23 ? Date and time either strange map or photo ref? and on another 4B 477 14.5.18. 11. 36A-E17.18.23.24 ? date and time (11am) map 36A.... strange ref? Also there is a line that looks like this -|------------------ I assume that it indicates north but which end is north?? This should help me track the location down. Or I can post here and make it a competition? Regards Leigh
Laurent Posted 29 September , 2004 Share Posted 29 September , 2004 4B 566: i think it's the reference of this picture (not sure !) or 566meters from the ground ???. 15.5.18. 1130: date and hour 36A-E17.18.23.24: reference map trenches sheet 36A Square (E17) 18.23.24. I have the same notes on my aerial photos collection !. Regards. Laurent.

A couple of things confirming what I thought and a few other enlightenments too. 27.X16.17.22.23 what map section will this be then ? I dont remember seeing a 27x. 27 East on the 10,000 scale maps covers Hazebrouck to Poperinge. Here is the image just for referance Regards Leigh North is to the left of the image. leigh Posted 29 September , 2004 Author Share Posted 29 September , 2004 Just read this page again on the western front reading trench maps And it seems there was the other method of numbering which does indeed include an X. I will investigate further. L.
