Neil Mackenzie Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 There have been a number of threads recommending places to eat and drink in Ieper but can anyone recommend somewhere is Passendale or Zonnebeke for lunch on a Sunday? Many thanks. Neil
Mark Hone Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 The cafe in the chateau complex at Zonnebeke (where the new museum is) seems to open on Sunday but I've never eaten there. The visitor centre at the Passendale cheese factory also has a cafe. I would recommend the Kollebloom at Langemark, but that's a little further way.
bkristof Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 De Volksbond, to the opposite site of the Cateau entrance of Zonnebeke is very good. But you need patience, they are not so good with English. You should orde STOOFVLEES, that is an very nice meal.
Neil Mackenzie Posted 29 September , 2004 Author Posted 29 September , 2004 Many thanks to both of you - may I ask what Stoofvlees is!! Kristof - I will be thinking of my great uncle on my visit in October as I am sure you are thinking of yours today. Het beste. Neil
bkristof Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 Hi, indeed it is a strange day to me. I often wonder how everything happend. What was he doing? How was the weather? Did he suffer? As far as i know he was hit by a shellsplinter. I hope he had a fast painless death. But no sad things anymore. Stoofvlees! That is : Stewed beef + sauce (made of: beer + onions + a little bit mustard + bread). Excellent with Flemish chips. It is like a Flemish goulash, but with beer sauce. Most Brits like it (i always tell them to taste it ). When do you come in october? Maybe i can guide you / meet you? greets, kristof
Neil Mackenzie Posted 29 September , 2004 Author Posted 29 September , 2004 Kristof. Thank you for the kind offer - I will contact you off forum in the next couple of days. Neil
Chris_Baker Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 We've stopped in Passendale at a lunchtime, with 14 hungry battlefield tourists aboard a minibus. There was not a single place that could cope! Best go to Zonnebeke!
Neil Mackenzie Posted 29 September , 2004 Author Posted 29 September , 2004 We've stopped in Passendale at a lunchtime, with 14 hungry battlefield tourists aboard a minibus. There was not a single place that could cope! Thanks Chris. I know you shouldn't see Remembrance in commercial terms but it does seem rather strange that the development of Battlefield tourism (if I can call it that) in the area over the last few years would appear to have passed Passendale by. Especially so since the town is synonymous with WW1. May be one of the Belgian Pals can explain it. Neil
bkristof Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 Easy explanation: WAIT UNTIL 2007, a lot of projects in progress...
DirtyDick Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 Are you opening a WW1 cafe, Kristof? Belgium's only Hard tack, Bully Beef and Maconachie's all-you-can-eat brunch bar, perhaps? "Experience the past by dining by candlelight in a hole in the ground" ... you would save a fortune on furniture. Richard
Neil Mackenzie Posted 29 September , 2004 Author Posted 29 September , 2004 Kristof. Do you want a business partner or two???? Neil
bkristof Posted 29 September , 2004 Posted 29 September , 2004 You are welcome: B&B + restaurant + souvenir shop This must work out!
Mark Hone Posted 30 September , 2004 Posted 30 September , 2004 The best time to eat in the middle of Passendale is the day of the cheese featival in August. It was a very jolly not to say bizarre occasion.
