glenda hewitt Posted 7 December , 2013 Share Posted 7 December , 2013 Does anybody know where exactly the switch runs in today's maps. If it is accessible. I know it is near kemmel and runs towards Ypres. Just trying to get an exact location. Probably middle of somebody's field. My gdad was billeted at butterfly farm. GraemeClarke Posted 8 December , 2013 Share Posted 8 December , 2013 Morning Glenda According to this the switch is just above the word 'Vierstraat' in the map For a bigger map download the below http://dmna.ny.gov/historic/reghist/wwi/infantry/27thInfDiv/StoryOfThe27th_vol1_Chap14.pdf As far as I can see, York Road is the Kemmelsewg (check it on Google maps). roel22 Posted 9 December , 2013 Share Posted 9 December , 2013 So a switch between two trench systems? Looks to be a pretty big switch... Roel
CROONAERT Posted 10 December , 2013 Share Posted 10 December , 2013 More of the whole 'switch line' (the off-shoot or diversionary track from the main line) in reality. For the Vierstraat Switch, the 'main line' was the GHQ 2nd Line with the actual 'switch' junction(s) being at Ridge Wood and Lindenhoek. The 'switch line' is the track (or trench in this case) between these two switch junctions. (Incidentally, Lindenhoek was the 'switch' between GHQ 2nd Line, GHQ 3rd Line and the Vierstaat Switch trench). Dave

Frank Are you looking for anything in particular. There are plenty of 1915 maps of Voormezeele in various War Diaries that cover the area. Frank Flanders Posted 13 November , 2022 Share Posted 13 November , 2022 it has to do with the how the situation in October 1915 was in that area concerning a Canadian Bn. By now I have most of the information I need. A 1915 map of that area still would be welcome. 4 hours ago, benjamin thyla said: These maps come from https://maps.nls.uk/ww1/trenches/, it is free, but mostly doesn't show the camps by name. brianmorris547 Posted 13 November , 2022 Share Posted 13 November , 2022 Frank These two maps are from the March 1915 War Diary of 85 Infantry Brigade, 28 Div. Courtesy TNA WO 95/2278. Neuve Eglise - St Eloi 1;20 000 Voormezeele 1:10 000 I will try and find a sketch dated October 1915 of the area you want. Brian
benjamin thyla Posted 13 November , 2022 Share Posted 13 November , 2022 (edited) Do you agree that Seddon Camp was in the Vierstraat Switch Line, on the "Basseije-side", SE corner of the Vierstraat road and the Kemmelstraat?
