In the service record of Pte. Michael Norton, 3/5th Cheshire Regt., it states on his attestation paper that he was "Previously with the V.B.C.R from 1900 to 1906." I have looked up several websites for military abbreviations but cannot find VBCR anywhere. Does anyone know what it means?

My pleasure

I have also had a quick look to see if Michael served during the Anglo Boer War 1899 - 1902 but I cannot see that a M Norton received the Queen's South Africa Medal. There was a C Norton who served with the 3rd Volunteer Company, 2nd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.

Hello again Sepoy

Michael was one of seven brothers who all served in the war and all survived (David and Donald were twins). The only one who was in South Africa was CSM Joseph Norton, DCM.

Hi Folks

Came across this in my local cemetery at Rake Lane, Wallasey (Cheshire in the good old days)

Must confess I didn't know what VBCR was.

2nd Volunteer Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. They were the predecessors of the Territorial Force.
