Compo Posted 21 November , 2013 Share Posted 21 November , 2013 I have a family photo and can date it fairly precisely to 1915/1916 from the age of my young relative. I know it was taken in Ireland. I am puzzled by the two men in cavalry uniforms, and wonder as to whether they could be Irish Yeomanry uniforms, Colonial mounted police uniforms, Boy Scouts or something else. Steven Broomfield Posted 21 November , 2013 Share Posted 21 November , 2013 Don't think they're cavalry. Irish Volunteers, Sinn Feiners? Goodness knows.
Old Owl Posted 21 November , 2013 Share Posted 21 November , 2013 I have no real idea who they are, but they could possibly be King Edward's Horse because they were there at that time. Robert

I see cobbled together Irish Volunteers plus Fianna Eireann headwear on men too old to be members. Very interesting. Dave.
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 21 November , 2013 Share Posted 21 November , 2013 I see cobbled together Irish Volunteers plus Fianna Eireann headwear on men too old to be members. jdoyle Posted 22 November , 2013 Share Posted 22 November , 2013 2 faces in the original photo look familiar (the chap with the rolled paper and the one lying down near his feet) but can't think of names. The founder/bandmaster of the Fianna Eireann pipe band died in France while the Easter Rising was on; his wife was trying to get involved in the Easter Rising but wasn't "called out" on account of 3 young children http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/325287/CALLENDER,%20B
Arthur J Posted 24 November , 2013 Share Posted 24 November , 2013 At least four appear to be wearing a badge/button on their lapels, would appear to be non military
Compo Posted 2 December , 2013 Author Share Posted 2 December , 2013 TKS to all for the replies, I am led to believe that the lapel "badge", if it is indeed a simple circle is a "fainne" (faunia) which signifies that the wearer speaks Irish. The one lying down on the left might be Fianna Eireann (Irish boy scouts) officer Liam Mellows. If they are Fianna, they must all be between 11 and 18. Many were apparently too poor to afford a uniform and part of their scouting activities was to steal a campaign hat from a Baden Powel Scout and wear it with the side pinned up Aussie style. The chap with the roll seems to have been going for an Eagle Scout badge and managed the entire uniform! Is that a Baden Powell Scout uniform can anyone confirm? The lad with the paper looks like LT.Seamus Quirke. http://irishvolunteers.org/2012/04/old-na-fianna-eireann-4-th-battalion/seamus-quirke-as-a-lt-in-the-fianna-eireann/
