Remembered Today:

Shell parts. Help needed

hello all

Brain picking time

In my research for Birmingham in the Great War, I have a list of some Birmingham firms that turned out munitions during WW1.

A lot of firms made either 4.5 inch HE shells or 18 pounder HE shells

But then some firms made the following:

Primers

Fuzes

Copper detonator tubes

Friction tubes

Plugs (wood)

Gaines

Adaptors

Have any forum members got any diagrams showing these parts or found any bits whilst walking the battlefields.

Ian Hogg's book 'Allied Artillery of World War One' has a number of good diagrams in it but it will be late morning Monday before I can scan them in. I will check again in the morning to see if anyone else has come up with pictures and if not I will scan some for you.

Terry

This is a 15lb shell showing many of the features you asked about. The tube isn't labelled but can be seen.

Sorry I don't have the exact pictures you want.

The next post shows an 18lb phosphorous shell.
