Looking for some help please.

An elderly relative of mine is trying to find out about one of his ancestors. The only information he has is that he was Royal Navy, and date & cause of death was; Drowning, November 20th 1917.

Any Navy buffs out there able to inform us if there were any actions on that day? Any info would be a starting point and much appreciated.

Only four deaths listed on http://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1917-11Nov.htm - the two by drowning that Horatio mentioned plus two died of illness. However, there are drowning deaths recorded on 19/11 and 21/11, and if it was overnight it might be listed under the other date...

If he was merchant navy instead, there was one ship sunk on the 20th (captured and sunk by submarine, though, which suggests the crew survived) - "ROBERT MORRIS, sailing vessel, 146grt, 20 November 1917, 155 miles WSW from Bishop Rock, captured by submarine, sunk by bombs" http://www.naval-history.net/WW1LossesBrMS1918.htm

No fishing vessels lost that day - http://www.naval-history.net/WW1LossesBrFV1917-18.htm

Andrew.
