Muerrisch Posted 12 November , 2013 Share Posted 12 November , 2013 Looks heavy, rope handles, and a handle at the bottom? Or is it upside down? Ideas please!

Muerrisch Posted 12 November , 2013 Author Share Posted 12 November , 2013 I wondered about that, but tea was usually brewed in a dixie "on site" was it not? And what is the poncy wire handle doing near the bottom? It looks a bit grand for a converted oil drum.
centurion Posted 12 November , 2013 Share Posted 12 November , 2013 Some form of cooker - the rope handles are to allow it to be shifted by a couple of carriers when hot (full of hot fluid) and thats a fire hole in the bottom. Back in the 50s the local scout troop used something very similar for making vile coco when camping. The wire handle is for a stick with a hook to allow it to be adjusted when alight (to turn it so the breeze goes in the hole)
GRANVILLE Posted 12 November , 2013 Share Posted 12 November , 2013 It's one of these. David
Grovetown Posted 12 November , 2013 Share Posted 12 November , 2013 Beat me to it Granville: it's a Thermos type container for for hot food and drink. Although the hole is a bit odd.... Uncle Bill on the forum has one, but I don't want to nick his picture of it off his Facebook page without permission. Cheers, GT.
SilverFox100 Posted 12 November , 2013 Share Posted 12 November , 2013 It's one of these.David I remember reading in Somme Mud by EPF Lynch where he describes carriers of what appears to be these units bringing hot food up to the front line, the shells going off too close to the carriers and the hot food going all over the place on the way to the trench as the guys jumped out of the way, quite badly burning the carrier. Muerrisch Posted 12 November , 2013 Author Share Posted 12 November , 2013 er, I cannot find said Charlie among members. Neither the outstanding Ms C Dimmock of dibber fame! The "fire hole" might be a blemish on the neg. or print, of course.
centurion Posted 12 November , 2013 Share Posted 12 November , 2013 It's one of these. David No it isn't - note the ration carrier is a different shape British ones were oval in cross section (German ones round)
Muerrisch Posted 12 November , 2013 Author Share Posted 12 November , 2013 Oh! what have I started here? "Container, troops, for the use of, with rope handles, one. oval section" and "Container, troops, for the use of, with rope handles, one. circular section" Indents in triplicate countersigned at Brigade level before issue. Grovetown Posted 12 November , 2013 Share Posted 12 November , 2013 I reckon it's just the elliptical view causing confusion. Cheers, GT,

Andrew Upton Posted 12 November , 2013 Share Posted 12 November , 2013 The "fire hole" might be a blemish on the neg. or print, of course. I assumed it was the reason the photo was taken - basically a "that could have been quite nasty" shot...
GRANVILLE Posted 12 November , 2013 Share Posted 12 November , 2013 I think that's exactly why the posed picture was taken - proof needed as to why the hot supper failed to get through!! David
