rossjcrombie Posted 12 November , 2013 Posted 12 November , 2013 My grandfather was injured by shrapnel at Neuve Chapelle in March 1915 when with the 1/4 Seaforth Highlanders. I am really keen to find out more about the incident and what happened to those around him. Any idea how I go about finding out? I still have the shrapnel, and i always remember my grandfather, long since dead I'm afraid, letting me put my finger in the indentation in his forehead!
Coldstreamer Posted 12 November , 2013 Posted 12 November , 2013 you could check the war diary for that date - they are held at the NA but someone here may have a copy

anthony osborne Posted 25 November , 2013 Posted 25 November , 2013 When I can get a chance I'll give you some detail on the 1/4th Seaforths you may very well be interested in. I'll get back to you this week. Ant
anthony osborne Posted 26 November , 2013 Posted 26 November , 2013 Ross, you need to get your hands on the 'History of the Fourth Battalion The Seaforth Highlanders' by Lieutenant Colonel M.M. Haldane. This gives a very good account of not on the battalion's history and mobilization but also their part in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. The Battalion played primarily a support role and did not engage with the enemy although they took a lot of casualties. The book also contains a picture of the Battalion's Sergeants so presumably your Grandfather appears in it. The Is a chap on the Forum called 'Seaforths' who may well be able to help you out more - I'm sure he'll be along soon. In he mean time get your hands on the book - it's a good read. All the best with your search - I'll keep my eyes peeled for you. Ant
