A looooong shot but I am writing an account about a former Swansea lad who went out to Oz and came back in 1916 with the above unit.

I have his service record from the Australian archives (Donald Herbert Odo Hopkins) but wonder if anyone has any detailed info on what the 49th encountered on 26 September 1917? It did for poor old Donald...don't suppose he's in an index to a book on the subject? A photo would be fantastic!

Any help appreciated.

Thanks very much folks.

Apologies for troubling you; I knew the service records were on-line but never thought the war diaries would be and hadn't looked. Same with the photo. A dumb moment!

Fantastic! Many thanks to all concerned.

Sorry I didn't have the intelligence to look myself...lesson learned.

Hi Bernard,

Have a look at Page 240 in ANZACs on the Western Front by Dr. Peter Pedersen for position of the 49th. It is my opinion that this book is a must-have.

It is more towards ANZAC Ridge than the Wood itself.

Regards, Peter
