Remembered Today:

Neglected Brecon grave....just post-WWI?

Recommended Posts

I assume this post-dates the Great War so apologies for not meeting strict site criteria, but apart from remembering the poor chap at this time, I'm just curious about what the Nigerian Regt, West Africa might have been up to at the close of the war, if anything?

No apology necessary as his death does not fall beyond the end of WW1.

He is commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission because the dates for commemoration are:

4/ 8 / 1914 – 31 / 8 / 1921

Rank: Colour Serjeant

Service No: 9865

Date of Death: 07/04/1919

Regiment/Service: King's Shropshire Light Infantry 3rd Bn.

Awards: D C M

Grave Reference: 3773.

Additional Information:

For the UK the war ended on 31st August, 1921, as fixed in the Termination of the Present War Act of 1918.

This is the official date on which the British Government declared the war to be at an end and is therefore the cutoff date for CWGC commemoration.

With thanks to Tom Morgan for explaining this.

(Edited a few times to tidy up the font and its size !)

Sorry but I can't read the name because of the shadow of the cross.

This looks like one of those graves which has fallen foul of Health and Safety. Headstones which are likely to fall and injure someone have been laid down to ensure that such an accident cannot happen.

Joseph Groom is listed on CWGC as 3rd Btn KSLI but listed on grave and MIC as 1st Btn. with a DoE as 2nd November 1914
