Moriarty Posted 7 November , 2013 Posted 7 November , 2013 Hello, none of the record links i have used have my grandfathers details. He was from Ireland so am wondering if there are seperate records for non english soldiers. I have his silver cigarette case with the name of his C.O. see attached photo. Any help would be much appreciated Our surname is incorrectly spelt on the cigarette case.
sotonmate Posted 7 November , 2013 Posted 7 November , 2013 One possibility of note. S/29713 Daniel Moriarty Army Service Corps,Private at war's beginning and Acting Staff Sergeant later. The only Medal Card for the name with the right rank. He first landed in France on 14.8.1914. Unit shown "5 R Supply Dt ASC". He may have been posted to a principal bridgehead such as Le Havre or Calais where large Supply Depots were based. His date into theatre would support this as the Divisions came along a couple of days later. He also received a Mention in Despatches in 1916,when he was a Lance Corporal.
sotonmate Posted 7 November , 2013 Posted 7 November , 2013 Mike I saw that one too. The Sergeant 8308 RMF was commissioned later though,so unlikely to get a ciggy case marked SSgt in 1918.
archangel9 Posted 7 November , 2013 Posted 7 November , 2013 Drawing a blank on the Lt.-Col so far.....
IPT Posted 7 November , 2013 Posted 7 November , 2013 I think the Lt Col is Thomas Percival Wansbrough.
archangel9 Posted 7 November , 2013 Posted 7 November , 2013 Spot on I think - Medal card of Wansbrough, Thomas Percival Corps Regiment No Rank Royal Army Service Corps Temporary Lieutenant Royal Army Service Corps Acting Lieutenant Colonel http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D5734324 John
IPT Posted 7 November , 2013 Posted 7 November , 2013 Following on from sotonmate's mention of supplies, we have this; The undermentioned to be actg. Lt.- Cols. : — Temp. Maj. T. P. Wansbrough, A.S.C.,- whilst holding the appt. of Chief Asst. to the Dep. Dir. o"f Supplies, Investigation Dept. 30th Oct. 1916. The next mention I can find is Wansbrough relinquishing this rank in March 1919, presumably a few months after the gift of the cigarette case.

Stebie9173 Posted 7 November , 2013 Posted 7 November , 2013 Colonel Wansbrough's officers file at the National Archives at Kew may contain some clues: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/details/C1074225?descriptiontype=Full&ref=WO+339/20308 (not online) Steve.
Moriarty Posted 8 November , 2013 Author Posted 8 November , 2013 Thanks everyone and yes he was from Tralee Co. kerry. So now i know his number S/29713. What details are held on the medical cards. When war broke out my grandfather's fiance was working as a governess in Austria. Despite being an irish citizen she was for some period of time interned by the Austrian authorites. A story my father told me was that they corresponded to each other courtesy of a irish priest who would smuggle their letters across enemy lines. Wish i had those letters. Nice story though. Thanks once again
