I have a soldier who had enlisted in the 9th Bn West Yorkshire Regt (PoWO) with the service number 21384

Could anyone please give me a precise enlistment date for him, or at least narrow it down?

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Thank you,

Pete.

Just out of interest sotonmate, is there any way that service number 21384 could have been issued in June 1915, or would there have been a strict sequence/allocation of numbers?

i.e. this number must have been issued in late May and before the number above (21387=29.5.1915)

cheers,

Pete.

Numbering, and the issuing of, is never an exact science but the end of May 1915 looks about right for attestation.

The 213xx range of numbers appear to have been issued to men attesting at the end of May 1915 and then being posted to either the 3rd (Reserve) or 4th (Extra Reserve) Battalions West Yorkshire Regiment. I've only done a quick search but the results are below:

21301 = Attested 25/05/1915, Approved 25/05/1915
21309 = Attested 25/05/1915, Approved 25/06/1915 (4th Bn.)
21318 = Attested 27/05/1915, Approved 27/05/1915 (3rd Bn.)
21326 = Attested 27/05/1915, Approved 25/06/1915 (4th Bn.)
21329 = Attested 27/05/1915, Approved 27/05/1915 (3rd Bn.)
21356 = Attested 26/05/1915, Approved 28/05/1915 (3rd Bn.)
21369 = Attested 27/05/1915, Approved 25/06/1915 (4th Bn.)
21376 = Attested 31/05/1915, Approved 31/05/1915 (3rd Bn.)
21385 = Attested 29/05/1915, Approved 31/05/1915 (3rd Bn.)
21397 = Attested 31/05/1915, Approved 31/05/1915 (3rd Bn.)

I don't know how the system worked but you'll note that those posted to the 4th Bn., although attesting in May, were approved at the end of June.....

Also note that none of the men enlisted directly into the 9th Battalion, those I've found records of were posted from the 3rd Battalion to the 9th Battalion on 21st September 1915, the same date that they embarked for overseas.

Regards

Steve
