I have added two stars to the map to indicate the location of Camp Moreau and Bagatelle Pavilion.

Johann was killed following underground fighting on 22 April 1915 at Bagatelle Pavilion.

Here is the Cemetery at Servon Melzicourt.

I have added a green button to the top image to mark the location of the Pionier Regiment No 20 monument.

The monument was moved here some time ago. It was originally in a cemetery several miles away.

And the visitor centre which should not be missed.

This is the reception room. It is most superb. I visited the cemetery last year and did not know this was here.

This time there was a note on the book in the chapel suggesting we should call in.

I am most pleased to have called in.

WELL DONE Monuments commission - top job !! - you have looked after them all.

Martin, I hope the experience was as fantastic for you as it was for me just a month ago.

I truly loved and was humbled by the Cemetery and its display.

Living in the United States, it is oddly satisfying to see other forumers travel to areas I had just recently been for the first time.

Regards.

Yes humbled indeed.

It is a very special place. The American Battle Monuments Commission do an awesome job looking after the site.

It is now a place of tranquility and a fitting tribute to all those who are at rest here.

  • Martin Feledziak changed the title to Johann FELEDZIAK Fusilier Regiment No37 Von Steinmetz - Consenvoye

We could hardly be in the locality and not call in on Johann at Consenvoye.

Again so tranquil as these soldiers at rest have a view out over to the Meuse river which slowly winds it's way by.

Almost unimaginable that this was a part of the front line during the great war.

Again it wooshes through the air, a hit, then horrified cries, the groaning of the wounded. What a rich bounty for the enemy artillery fire!

“Dreadful destruction”, wrote Leutnant Hamacher, deputy-adjudant of I/136 at the time (Böcker represented the Regiments Adjudant, who was on furlough), “Commander dead, Captain Leuer dead, Böcker and myself severly wounded, Böcker groaned “I am dying, my poor wife” –

No one to help! My right arm hangs down (shivering?), with my left hand I found my platooncommander’s whistle and I blew the whistle. After some time my batman Buhmann arrives, he was shot through the mouth, the wound was already bandaged. The dying Böcker and myself were carried into a church or a house. There I lost consciousness.

I will never forget that day. This surprise attack, the destruction, the sight of both dead, as if they were sleeping, one still with his hands in his pockets. Deathly pale.

Just reviewing the photographs which I took at Consenvoye.

with a little zooming I spotted :-

Just two rows in front of Johann  the final resting place of Major Kurt KAULBACH.

who we discussed in the action above.

Verlustlisten 1. Weltkrieg, page 28171: Kaulbach Kurt (Nakel, Wirsitz)

The soldier in the next plot is Herrmann BANNING from IR 150 and died the same day. Perhaps in the same incident as IR150 were in line with IR136.

Having decided to look into the regimental history of IR136. I overlaid the map for 28 Sept 1918.

It marks the command post for IR 136 and I imagine it was the precise location where the senior command team were wiped out by artillery fire.

So it is just under half a mile from the Now American Cemetery and

right next to the spot where we decided to have a pick nic.

A correction reporting his death.

It was from the time when soldiers were reported alphabetically.

Not by Regiment.

I have had this image in a folder on my virtual desktop for a number of years. It has the swords of the Meissen factory.

it appears they made a large number for many Regiments and these are now going for top money.

Obviously this one is for Fusilier Regiment Von Steinmetz No37 - with the date of it's formation 26.1.1818.

A snapshot of 101 years ago today.

The junction of the German 52nd and 115th Divisions.

They were defending the opposing units from the American 32nd Division.

This passage is from page 272 IR171 history kindly translated by JWK Forum Member,

Heavy fire from around 09:30 led us to expect something special.

And indeed the Americans suddenly attacked en masse.

Their weapons pushed through the thin lines at II/171 , east from Gesnes.

The machinegun crews in the back couldn't see anything because of the thick fog, and therefor could not aim and fire.

The Minenwerfer in the frontline was overrun.

Neither Batl. Kiesslich, nor the Regiment could send any help, as the first was also under heavy attack, and one Battl. 109, upto then in reserve, was sent to IR 173 already.

The left and right flanks were closed off, but the Americans did however, coming from the east of Gesnes, encircled the main part of II/171, for a part killing many {niedermachen: to butcher, to slaughter], and capturing the rest. Only a few escaped, amongst whom the Batls.Commander.

III/171 Hauptmann Kiesslich desperately fought on.

The Americans were halted by a counter-attack from 10/171 and a Company of the Leibgrenadier Regiment 109, at the old front of II/171.

Parts of II/173 counterattacked from the north in the direction of the former left-wing of II/171.

Repeated attacks with heavy artillery-fire, including attacks with tank, of which one was destroyed, were repelled, even though the Americans, who were already in the vicinity of the “Robinette Fm” [Robinette Farm?], behind III/171, and fired at them from there.

How persistent the fighting was is evidenced by one single Machine gun which fired 13000 rounds.

At around 08:30 at night the III/171, which lost over 70 men, got the order to withdraw to the Kriemhild-Stellung, where they were joined by their neighbours.

As also to the south of Romagne the Americans had attacked heavily.

Only after many casualties were they pushed back. They had to retreat because of the renewed attacks.

Reinforcements, which took over south of Romagne, held the line.

At night the front ran somewhat along the road Somerance-Romagne-Cunel.

Sequence of regiments, from west to east: IR171, IR 173, IR 136.

1361482929_9thOctober1918.JPG.8705bff3bb7f1c3ebf481b8b72fb5832.JPG

Again from the regimental history of the Lieb Grenadier 109.

This is the overview of the situation on 9th October 1918.

IR171 have been dislodged from Hill 255 and forced Northwards they have taken up position south of Robinette Farm.

Here is the situation map from the point of view of the American 1st Division, 32nd Division and 91st Division.

Amongst other specific locations Robinette Farm and Hill 255 are common to both maps.
