museumtom Posted 28 October , 2013 Share Posted 28 October , 2013 I am trying to find any information on the SS Hanlen (Hanlon?) owned by W T Jones, Cardiff which sunk on May 19, 1917. Try as I might I cannot find anything on this ship on the net and the CWGC throws up nothing. Can you help please? Kind regards. Tom.
Michael Lowrey Posted 28 October , 2013 Share Posted 28 October , 2013 Tom, There’s no Hanlen or Hanlon in Lloyd’s Register of Shipping for 1916/17. Looking at the shipowner section, the W. & C. T. Jones Steamship Co., Ltd., Cardiff did have a steamer named Haulwen, which was sunk by U 43 on the night on June 9/10, 1917 with four casualties. More details are here. Best wishes, Michael
jdoyle Posted 28 October , 2013 Share Posted 28 October , 2013 possibly the Hanley, sunk 30th May 1917? Cardiff link but different owner. The only Waterford death I can see for the period relates to Michael Cheasty on the Highbury but that was sunk in June 1917 after his death. museumtom Posted 28 October , 2013 Author Share Posted 28 October , 2013 Thank you Michael and Johnnie, two possibilities to follow up. A quick check shows it was in fact, Haulwen. Newspapers get it wrong sometimes, it seems. Kind regards. Tom.
jdoyle Posted 28 October , 2013 Share Posted 28 October , 2013 date of the sinking appears off too. 4 Waterford casualties appear on CWGC for this ship with a Waterford link. Ditto Mercantile Marine monument http://www.londonremembers.com/memorials/mercantile-marine-memorial-ww1/inscriptions?utf8=%E2%9C%93&search=haulwen&memorial_id=3511&page=1 Johnny
