I am trying to find any information on the SS Hanlen (Hanlon?) owned by W T Jones, Cardiff which sunk on May 19, 1917. Try as I might I cannot find anything on this ship on the net and the CWGC throws up nothing. Can you help please?

Kind regards.

Tom.

Tom,

There’s no Hanlen or Hanlon in Lloyd’s Register of Shipping for 1916/17. Looking at the shipowner section, the W. & C. T. Jones Steamship Co., Ltd., Cardiff did have a steamer named Haulwen, which was sunk by U 43 on the night on June 9/10, 1917 with four casualties. More details are here.

Best wishes,

Michael

possibly the Hanley, sunk 30th May 1917? Cardiff link but different owner.

The only Waterford death I can see for the period relates to Michael Cheasty on the Highbury but that was sunk in June 1917 after his death.

Thank you Michael and Johnnie, two possibilities to follow up. A quick check shows it was in fact, Haulwen. Newspapers get it wrong sometimes, it seems.

Kind regards.

Tom.
