Remembering today my Gt Gt Uncle Sergeant Charles William Scriven “C” Company, 2nd Battalion, Duke of Edinburgh's (Wiltshire Regiment). Died of Wounds, on the 28th October 1915 aged 28. Buried at Chocques Military Cemetery Plot I. G. 87.

Charles was born to Edwin and Ann Scriven a resident of Minty, Wiltshire in 1887, he later moved with his parents and 5 siblings to Hullavington (His younger brother Arthur fought with the AIF and survived the war and went on to become my Great Grandfather).

Charles and was a pre-war regular (No 7180 2nd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment) having attested on the 4th January 1905. He married Mary Ann Tull in Pembroke on the 20th November 1907. He was transferred to the army reserves on the 23rd June 1911and was recalled to his regiment on the 5th August 1914, he was later discharged on the 28th November 1914, as no longer physically fit for war service.

He then re-enlisted and was sent to France on the 21st April 1915 and later fought at the battle of Loos, due to the high number of casualties suffered by the battalion the war diary does not state where or when he was injured.

Remembered at Church of St. Mary, Hullavington

Rest in Peace Charles, Never Forgotten. :poppy:
