Guest Posted 25 October , 2013 Share Posted 25 October , 2013 Hello - I have a subscription to Ancestry but I don't know how to search for individuals who were serving at Home based stations. I know how to find the Overseas battalions, but the home based ones elude me. Does anyone know if the data is part of the 1911 Census, and if so how does one access it via ancestry? If one was searching for a man who was serving at the time, would he automatically come up on the normal search of the 1911 Census? Thanks in advance. CGM Posted 25 October , 2013 Share Posted 25 October , 2013 I can't help with Ancestry but on Find my Past if you do a routine 1911 census search for a man who was serving he will certainly automatically appear in the list of men with his name but will be marked as Type Institution rather than Type Household. Opening the entry will show the Institution to be his Barracks. (Or, if you have the wrong man it might say a Workhouse or a Hospital or a school etc.)
CGM Posted 25 October , 2013 Share Posted 25 October , 2013 I have just tested a man I know from FMP was serving at home and on Ancestry, in the summary, his residence is listed as Military.
Guest Posted 25 October , 2013 Share Posted 25 October , 2013 Inputting " soldier " in the Occupation box worth a try? Also as mentioned " Military " in the Keyword box. Mike
ralphjd Posted 25 October , 2013 Share Posted 25 October , 2013 Just entered "Military" in the keyword box and it throws up in excess of 200,000 names . Good hunting.
Guest Posted 25 October , 2013 Share Posted 25 October , 2013 Dear all - thanks.....putting Military into the Keyword generates 218,875 people which feels about right. Thank you MG

MG FWIW, I put together a short index of Aldershot-based units here - http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=176299 - full lists for eighteen infantry battalions, three cavalry regiments, and some miscellaneous others.
