New Testament

Hello

Can anyone tell me about the use of New Testaments in WW1? Were they issued to all soldiers? Who was responsible for issuing them? Was it the church or the army? Any other details surrounding their use etc would be appreciated.

This is on the inside of 22686 Pte.George Nicolls` KIA 11/05/1916.

Not sure if you can see it "from the Rev. M Strong Glencorse Parish by Edinburgh.
