BereniceUK Posted 22 October , 2013 Share Posted 22 October , 2013 Just one question - was he serving in the Royal Defence Corps or The King's (Liverpool Regiment) at the time of his death on 13th October 1916, aged 53? CWGC database has him in the Royal Defence Corps, the family headstone has him in the 2nd/5th The King's (Liverpool Regiment).

IPT Posted 22 October , 2013 Share Posted 22 October , 2013 He certainly wasn't serving with 2/5th KLR at the time of his death; 2/5th BattalionFormed in Liverpool in September 1914 as a Second Line battalion.8 February 1915 : came under orders of 171st Brigade, 57th (2nd West Lancashire) Division.Landed in France in February 1917.1 February 1918 : disbanded in France with personnel going to 2/6th, 2/7th, 11th and 12th Bns I don't think he'd been abroad, as the 2 MICs for James Rice (with no middle initial) are also casualties. It's a very specific battalion on the gravestone. I wonder what the story is.
