Remembered Today:

Royal Dublin Fusiliers/Royal Irish Regiment

I have these numbers, 26522 and 16511, Royal Dublin Fusiliers and Royal Irish Regiment, from Medal Rolls but I think the service records are burnt records. Is there any way I can find out the Battalion(s) this man was in so I can try and piece together some of his War record?

He was Joseph Patrick Daly, b. 1895. I'm doing this on behalf of his son, in readiness for the commemoration next year.

I'd be really grateful for any help.

Sue

good chance he went to the 10th Battn to start with. May have been in Dublin for the Easter Rising.

25520 Walter J C Sheedy enlisted 22/3/1916 Battn not known yet

26523 John Connell enlisted 3/12/1915 in Manchester. 10th Battn, later 1st Battn

26524 John Andrew Toohey from Salford enlisted 13/11/1915 10 Battn. Moved to 11th Battn in July 1916

26525 (Michael) Joseph Farrell enlisted 19/2/1916 in Manchester. 10th Battn, later 11th Battn and then 9th Battn

Hi Sue.

When you say you got the numbers from the Medal Rolls do you mean from the Medal Index Card?

The Medal Roll can only be seen at the NA Kew and will show his battalion(s) too.

KGB, that's given me an idea. On checking CWGC.

Royal Irish Regiment: 16513, 16532, 16540, 16544, 16552, 16574, 16586 & 16595 were 2nd Battalion. 16570 was 7th Battalion.

All I know is my Grandfather was 16212 (5th Bn) and his brother 4272 (C Coy 2nd Bn)!

Thanks for all the replies. I'm so pleased there are people out there willing and able to help! Yes, I got the numbers from the Medal Rolls Index Cards. I looked for the Service record but I couldn't find it so it could be one of the burnt ones? He came from Manchester. I'll follow up the leads you've all given me to see if I can find any more clues. If any other ideas crop up, I'd be very grateful for them!

Thanks once again

Sue

Hi,

I think your Granfather's number was 6212 and he was reported missing in Feb 1915

Almost certainly wrong but thanks for quoting me! My Grandfather enlisted into the 5th R.I.R in Aug 1914 and did training until Jun 1915 when he was transferred to the 5th Bn R.I.F. He was 16212.
