any idea what this is

can any body tell me what this is,my boys photographed it on a tour of the somme this year.

it was laid in a trench,and they can't remember if there was anything saying what it was.

A WILD guess - I'm sure the experts will have told you the name of the chap who fired it last by the end of the day!

It looks to me like part of the "recuperator" (recoil) mechanism from an artillery piece or a heavy mortar.

It's an (incomplete) 17cm German medium trench-mortar ("minenwerfer"). Is it that one on Vimy Ridge?

hi guys that was quick.

your possibly right dave,i do know they where on vimy ridge.

they where there on a holts long way to tipperary tour.

the wife and myself are hoping to go on this tour ourselves in 2005.
