More help please with uniform

I am still sorting through my box of photos trying to work out who is who!

Is it possible to tell the regiment of this soldier from hisuniform?

It could be: Ernest Dransfield - Royal Engineers no. 84094

Sidney Dransfield - Royal Engineers 72151 (served in Egypt), or

Willie Dransfield - Army Service Corps. - The only possible record I can find for him on Ancestry gives a number: T4/252352.

The brothers are all from Leeds.

Thank you for your help.

Unfortunately both the Engineers and ASC wore bandolier equipment so there is no clue there. If it is Sidney he is not wearing his light khaki drill uniform so probably not taken in Egypt. Both ASC and RE shoulder titles would look as the one in the picture when viewed edge on. The only thing I can think of is that a white lanyard often depicts a junior non commision such as Lance Corporal or Corporal.

As T8Hants says, unfortunately there is nothing in that photo to pin him down either to ASC or RE. The lanyard could have been worn by a member of either corps.

Judging by the leather 'Bandolier' and what appears to be a 'white' lanyard, might suggest an Artillery connection?, certainly 'mounted'! RA,RFA,RHA,RGA? If T4 then obviously from a Territorial battalion.

Agree with 'old moose', white lanyard would suggest Royal Artillery RHA RGA.orRFA

Apparently not 'obviously' at all then! ........... (the 'T4' prefix on his regimental number signifies that the soldier was engaged in Horse Transport for the 4th New Army... Army Service Corps.)

Lanyards were issue items to all ranks of all corps and infantry, and were for attaching to the jack knife - itself meant to carried in the breast pocket.

This guy has a fancy dan private purchase one, yet it tells us nothing about his corps.

Cheers,

GT.

I stand corrected ref to T4 prefix to service number.

However if T4 is on epaulette, then surely a Territorial? There does appear to be some sort of additional insignia above the usual position for the brass shoulder title!?

Are there any other photos of him?

As a novice I'm getting confused now! Could this be the same person?

Trouble with brothers - they tend to look alike!

As their father was a blacksmith it makes sense that one of them would have something to do with horses.

This is definitely Sidney - Royal Engineers 72151. Served in 3 - Egypt in 1915 according to his medal rolls index card.

Thanks for your help.

The bandolier and armband would suggest RE Signal Service. They were mounted as they had various tasks such as cable laying using horse drawn cable wagons.

So these are more likely to be brothers rather than the same person?

Looks like both of them worked with horses?

Would guess the first picture is of Willie - ASC ? The Horse Transport 4th new Army sort of makes sense.

Second one is definitely Sidney (says so on back!) but interesting to know about the Signal Service.

I have a picture of someone I think is Sidney on a donkey (or is it a horse?) in Egypt!

What do you think?

Thank You for all your help to everyone who has been following this post.

The donkey picture is a standard tourist photo, those poor donkeys must have had half the Egyption Expeditionary Force on their backs..
