MIC to Regimental Goat!

From the October issue of Ancestors magazine.

"The project to put WW1 Soldiers' Campaign Medal Index Cards online has uncovered an unlikely recipient. Robert Kent, a member of the project's quality control team, spotted a card recording the award of the 1914 Star to "Taffy the IV", whose rank was described as 'The Regimental Goat'.

Major Martin Everett of the Regimental Museum of the Royal Regiment of Wales was able to supply further details about the events leading to the award. Taffy had been on active service with the 2nd Battalion Welch Regiment during the Retreat from Mons and he went on with the Battalion into the first great Battle of Ypres and Gheuveldt, and later Festubert and Givenchy. He died, still on active service, in January 1915, as recorded on the medal card. The Regiment's museum in Cardiff Castle does not hold the medal and, as Taffy did not have a next of kin, where is it now?

Major Everett adds: "Of course, there is a modern Taffy who is on the battalion ration roll as 'Gwilyn Jenkins' and is based in Paderborn in Germany"
